It’s normal to have good and bad days at work. But it’s something entirely different when one of your best employees is seriously looking to leave for another opportunity. Here are five very valid reasons they could quit:
Poor management
Unfortunately, many good employees leave due to poor management or lack of a relationship with their manager. Managers are required to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. When there are expectations that must be met, they must be communicated. Otherwise, everyone is disatisfied and the company suffers as a consequence. Feedback and coaching are two essential requirements that employees seek – and when there’s nothing but a threatening environment, it only leaves the employee (and manager) frustrated.
Too much or too little work
Good employees are capable of doing more than what is assigned to them. But when there isn’t much work to do, the daily duties can become mundane. The opposite effect can occur when there is a lack of personnel and too much work. It’s oftentimes a challenge for businesses to accomplish for all employees, but a balance between feeling burnt out and unaccomplished must be achieved in order to keep that great employee.
Lack of life/work balance
Some know within days of entering a job that they will quit, and life/work balance has a lot to do with it. Some employees have family responsibilities, and if the flexibility isn’t there – well, family comes first. Others prefer a healthy balance where they can leave their work at the end of the day and tend to fitness, friends, family, and other passions. If the workload or culture doesn’t allow this, it takes a toll on the employee.
Promotional complications
Many employees are looking to move up the ladder at some point. But if there is no upward mobility, no matter how hard they work – no advancements in salary or opportunity – there is a good chance they will start to look for that better opportunity elsewhere (nothing personal).
No reward system
If there is no promotion, the least a good employee does look for is recognition and encouragement. If the company does not attribute to loyal employees for putting in those extra hours or taking on that additional project, then they might move on to someplace where they do feel appreciated for their efforts.
