It’s a new year which inspires all of us to set new goals for improvement. While employers are busy strategizing their hiring needs for 2024, job seekers are mapping out their career growth plans. It’s a time-consuming activity for both parties, who need each other to succeed. So how can we improve the process and make it less frustrating? Here are a few resolution ideas to consider:
Employers Resolution 1: I will write job descriptions that realistically outline the responsibilities and expectations associated with the role(s) I’m looking to fill. I will specify the skills and qualifications required, and clearly distinguish between “must-haves” and “nice-to-haves.”
Employers Resolution 2: I will be transparent on company culture, work environment (remote/hybrid), compensation, benefits, and growth opportunities in the organization, understanding that this helps attract candidates who appropriately qualified and a good cultural fit.
Employers Resolution 3: I will set timeframes for receiving resumes, scheduling interviews, and making a final decision. I will keep candidates informed on where they are in the process to respect their time and not leave them hanging.
Employers Resolution 4: I will find a way to acknowledge receipt of a candidates resume and let them know if they are being seriously considered for the position.
Employers Resolution 5: I will keep the company career page up-to-date and accurate, with correct contact information, and taking down old job posts, etc. understanding that it can be confusing and frustrating to apply for a job that is already filled.
Job Seeker Resolution 1: I will read the job posting and description and realistically evaluate my personal skills, experience, and qualifications before uploading a resume. I will be honest about my credentials to ensure a genuine fit for the role.
Job Seeker Resolution 2: I will customize my cover letter and resume for every job application, emphasizing relevant skills and credentials, as well as my goals for career growth.
Job Seeker Resolution 3: I will read the organization’s website and be prepared for the interview with relevant questions for the interviewer.
Job Seeker Resolution 4: The objective for any job role is to be an asset to the prospective employer and contribute to the success of the organization using my skills and experience. I will think about and assess how I can be an asset to organization’s bottom line, mission, and productivity before applying for the job.
Job Seeker Resolution 5: I will be responsive and clear in my communications with a prospective employer. I will show up on time, dress appropriately, and conduct myself professionally.
By fostering a culture of transparency and respect in the hiring process, both employers and job seekers stand to gain substantial benefits. Employers attract candidates who are genuinely interested in and qualified for the role, while job seekers find positions that align with their skills and career objectives. Ultimately, the synergy between realistic job descriptions and honest resumes create a foundation for successful, long-term professional relationships, and no doubt, an exciting and fulfilling year ahead! Lead on!
