The interview process can be pressuring for both the employer and candidate. It’s the candidate’s job to be on their best, but it’s the interviewer’s job to bear responsibility on how to steer the interview. Asking the right questions and preparing properly is all part of an effective interview – so are these tips:
1. Get personal
When you get to know the candidate on a personal level, not only will get an idea of how this person will fit in with the culture of your company, but you also humanize the process. The more relaxed you both are, the smoother the interview will run and the more your candidate will open up. You know the traits you’re looking for – lighten up the conversation and observe. This is someone you might be working with for years to come.
2. Ask open ended questions
Instead of asking, “What were your last job duties?” You might want to ask them a question that will provoke a more interesting response. For example, “Where do you envision yourself in five years?” It’s a tough question, but is also calls for a perspective answer. Plus, you might find that you both have similar goals in common.
3. Listen effectively
You might be hearing the candidate, but are you listening? Listening to the interviewee effectively means you are staying in the moment and taking in all the positives and negatives without being one step too far ahead. When you’re one step ahead, your judgement could be off note.
4. Be in the now
Effective listening brings us to our last tip – be in the now. Staying in the present moment is more important that one could write about. When you stay in the present moment, you don’t get tripped up on your next question and drift off. You also won’t miss a key statement he or she makes.
