So you’ve hired a new team member and now it’s time to set goals and expectations. It may not come as a surprise that many managers find this part particularly difficult – setting clear and realistic guidelines. It’s up to you as a boss to communicate with your new hire about the goals that are set in place and where you hope the company will be in six months or even a year. A few tips for laying out goals are as follows:
Be clear set goals
One of the biggest mistakes a manager could make is not being clear when setting examples. Whether it be written or verbal, communicate with your employee about the goals you have set. Make sure they are understood and questions are answered.
Make goals measurable
The goals you set with your employee should align with those of the broader organization you work for. However, make sure they are realistic and measurable.
Create motivating and achievable goals
If the goals don’t motivate your employee, they’re less likely to achieve them. Motivation is key to achieving goals. Set goals that relate to the priorities at work – without this type of focus, you can set too many goals that leave your employee with little time to achieve ach one.
Set smart goals
Ever heard of SMART goals? SMART goals stand for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time bound. If your goals don’t meet each one of these points, your new hire might not be able to ultimately achieve the guidelines. Consider re-assessing if this is the case.
