Everyone is aware of the catch 22 when it comes to job searching – you need experience to get experience, but no one will hire you without the experience. And for those who have even well over five years experience – well, landing that dream job is still a challenge.
Many of us can benefit by going above and beyond during the application process. It’s easy to get lost in the talent pool no matter how much professional background you possess. That is why these three tactics can boost your chances of getting the call back:
Cover letter: There’s a fairly big debate between job seekers on whether or not you should include a cover letter when submitting a resume. While some claim it isn’t necessary and that it won’t be read, it’s a surefire way to set yourself apart from the competition. With a cover letter, you are able to get personal and highlight your accomplishments. More importantly, you can express your passion for the open position – something your resume cannot do.
Previous work: If you have a list of accomplishments, don’t be afraid to share it. Send the employer your previous work experience and a portfolio of past projects. Some job listings will require you submit this, but even if it doesn’t we recommend you do so regardless. You could write these accomplishments in the form of case studies or put a website together (whether it be a blog or graphic design work).
References: Don’t wait for the hiring manager to ask your permission for personal references – get ahead of the game by planning ahead. Create a list of potential references and ask each one if they would be willing to serve as a reference for you. Send out this list next time you submit your resume.
Landing the job you want is a challenge, but being smart and proactive about putting yourself out there is key to a successful shot at a response from the employer.
