Asking for help — something we all need to do, but our pride gets in the way. Here are four repercussions by failing to do so.
1. You Put Your Professional Reputation At Risk
When we make a mistake, it’s a blow to our ego — not to mention embarrassing. But, when you don’t ask for help, you end up making people believe that you don’t know what you’re doing.
2. You Alienate Others
When you don’t speak up, your peers assume you don’t need help. This can also come off as antisocial and not open for group work or thinking. This only makes it harder for you to reach out to others (and vice versa) for help.
3. People Lose Trust In You
Your team becomes worried in your abilities. They’ll end up having concerns about your work ethic and how you end up impacting the overall goals of the company. Trust less leads to more micromanaging going forward (and who wants to take a step backwards?).
4. You Miss Opportunities For Growth
You often miss the chance to learn from your mistake when you ask for help too late in the game.
Others are more experiences, more educated, and more skilled in certain aspects. So use your colleagues as a tool for advice.
