Want more money? That’s fine. But do you deserve more money? That’s up for interpretation. But not if you’re negotiating in all the wrong ways.
1. Never Bring Up a Colleague’s Salary.
It doesn’t matter what the person sitting next to you is making (you’re probably not supposed to even know). If you begin bringing this up, don’t be surprised when you get shown the door instead of a new fat paycheck.
2. Don’t Bring Up Your Last Raise.
If your last raise was way too long ago, don’t mention it; it won’t make your case. It’s the fact that your hard work and current performance merits one, and that’s what you need to convince your boss of.
3. Don’t Bring Up The Date Either.
This is a common mistake among employees across the board. “I’ve been here for X years now” won’t get you the response you’re looking for. Loyalty is a plus at any job, but it’s not an argument for a pay raise, your work ethic is.
If you want to ask for a raise, it’s time to start performing for the salary you want, not the one you have. Take on additional responsibilities, communicate your actions (without bragging), and write all of your accomplishments and achievements down! This way, when it’s time to knock on your boss’s door, you’ll be prepared and your employer will be impressed.
