Americans are known to be workaholics, but all of that hard work can quickly lead to workplace burnout. A term coined in the 1970s by American psychologist Herbert Freudenberger, burnout is an individual’s response to chronic emotional and interpersonal stressors within the workplace. If you’re noticing signs of employee burnout, there are a few immediate steps you can take to prevent it from continuing.
1. Be realistic when assigning tasks. According to a study by Stress.org, the main cause of workplace stress is the workload (46%). Delegate an amount of work that’s challenging, but not overwhelming.
2. Follow their passion. Nothing’s more dissatisfying than being in a role that you hate. Try to create new stations or move skilled employees to different roles. This will help ensure that each member of your team is in the right position.
3. Allow side projects. Set aside time every month for your employees to focus on work-related side projects, Some of Google’s most innovative ideas came from an employee side project.
4. Keep reasonable working hours. Employees differ on how many hours they can work without feeling stressed or worn down. But, as long as you make sure your teams aren’t working 24/7, everyone will remain happy. Sick days, paid time off, and vacation days help too!
