Meet Tey Scott — senior director of global talent acquisition at LinkedIn. She’s learned a lot throughout the years, and she’s sharing her list of lessons for growing professionally.
1. Remove “should” from your vocabulary.
Everyone measures success differently, so it’s best not to allow yourself to compare your achievements to others. It doesn’t quite matter how you get to where you want to be (i.e. whether you get that ‘seemingly’ perfect job straight out of college or at 40 years old), as long as you are on the path you want to be on — not one that you think you should be on.
2. Your job title doesn’t make you happy.
While it’s always important to love what you do, it’s not the only thing that makes encompasses who you are. According to Scott, it’s important to keep our careers in perspective and balanced with a meaningful personal life.
3. Earn what you ask for.
Some people tend to think that they innately deserve that promotion or that raise that their peers received. But that’s something you have to earn. Instead of simply declaring what you deserve, prove why you have earned what you’re asking for. You’ll be hearing a lot less “no’s” in your life.
4. Move past the “no’s.”
Speaking of “no’s,” when you do receive one (because you will, a lot), pick yourself up and don’t give up. Scott says to ask for feedback, and remain flexible and open to adjustments. Its up to you to pave the path you want for yourself, and giving up won’t get you there.
