Women have made tremendous strides for gender equality in the workplace. According to Christie Garton, founder of the 1,000 Dreams Fund, “a growing number of companies want more diversity in their ranks, with more females in key leadership roles.” But if this is true, why is there still a large gap between where women are and where they want to be?
Four Of The Biggest Challenges Women Face In The Workplace
A survey released by the 1,000 Dreams Fund and Recruiter.com found that many women are unhappy in their careers due to a number of factors, including:
1. Money. Fifty-five percent of women surveyed chose a college major they were passionate about – unfortunately passion doesn’t always pay the bills. Thirty-two percent would have or have taken a job they don’t necessarily love just to pay off college debt.
2. Harassment. Twenty-one percent of respondents said they’ve been a victim of harassment in the workplace. Meanwhile, 20 percent have been a victim of bullying, primarily from other women.
3. Exhaustion. It seems as if relaxation is something Millennial women rarely experience. After years of schooling, once they’re in the workforce, they’ve simply reached their breaking point.
4. Unpreparedness. Only 25 percent of those polled said they’re “very confident” in their interviewing skills. More than half feel they could benefit from interview training and resume building.
All of this unhappiness has left young women struggling to decide their next move. Ultimately, women in the workplace may have to redefine their goals and come up with different measures of success in order to thrive in the business world.
According to Garton, “Align yourself with workplace mentors, who can help you navigate the environment. They can become some of your best advocates and help you deal with your challenges.”
