Work-life balance — three little words that can potentially stand between you and a job offer. Every employee wants this luxury, and every company offers it. But, not every company wants you to completely clock out after 5 p.m.
Tips for Answering Work-Life Balance Tests:
- Utilize the 80/20 rule – It’s believed that 20% of the labor spent on a project yields 80% of the results. With that being said, share with them that you schedule most of your time to the critical stages of any work task (typically, the beginning and the end).
- Avoid multitasking – Recent studies have shown that multitasking, in the long run, is not actually a valuable trait. Demonstrate your ability to work efficiently while still providing quality work.
- Set mini deadlines – It’s important to meet deadlines and sometimes you have to work off the clock in order to do so. Explain how you will break projects into smaller tasks, setting mini deadlines for each one leading up to the due date — this way you’re continuously making progress.
The Disneyland Question
“Would you leave your family at Disneyland to do something really important for the company?” This question doesn’t require a yes or no response. Instead, explain to the recruiter how you will handle your workload before you go away — ensuring all projects and tasks would be completed or handed off to a trusted colleague before you left.
The Sunday Text
Some employers reach out to potential candidates on Sunday to see how fast they respond. If you’re out, don’t fret. Let them know that you’re always available during the week and weekends, but since you’re out at the moment, you would prefer to respond first thing Monday morning.
